Carl Osgar Julius Schindler was born in Clausthal, Kingdom of Hanover (now Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Niedersachsen, Germany). He is the son of Johann Carl Schindler a miner (1798-1846) and Johanna Wilhelmine Hölling, both of Clausthal. Wilhelmine emigrated with her 2 Daughters and 4 sons in 1853. They are first found in Lykens on the 1860 Census.
Carl worked in the mines of Lykens and Ashland. During the Civil war he enlisted at Age: 19 -- He is listed as being a Private in Co A 45th NY March 1 1865 , but transferred to the 58th NY volunteers June 30,1865 (it appears the 45th and 58th combined into one). He is also listed as enlisting in the PA 58th Inf. Regiment. He married Mary Agnes DeFrehn in 11/25/1873 • Zion Luthern Church, Lykens, Dauphin County, Pa.
Name variations include Schindler and Shindler and Osgar, Oskar, and Oscar.
His father is unknown but would have died in Germany and his mother, while listed as Wilhelmine Schindler wife of Carl is not absolutely certain as Wilhelmine had to be given gaurdianship before leaving Germany. This writer suspects that Sophia (König) Schindler had a child out of wedlock, and later adopted by his grandmother. No proof exists, but he does not show up on the German church baptismal records.
