Erma B. Fouse

Erma Blanche Davis Fouse, 90, passed to a better life on Feb. 23, 2007, at Wyngate Assisted Living in Vienna, while under Hospice care.

The daughter of Effie Alice Chancey and Cyrus Allen Davis, Erma was born on May 23, 1916, at home in Duncan, W.Va.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert William Astle of Sarasota, Fla., Brian Lee Astle and Deborah Reed-Astle of Atlantic City, N.J.; three grandsons, Patrick Miles Astle of Baltimore, Md., William Franklin Astle of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and Christopher Todd Astle of South Riding, Va.; two stepchildren, Robert D. Fouse and Dianna Fouse Barbour; two siblings, Harold C. Davis and Donna June Davis Martin; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Erma was predeceased by three husbands, Frank E. Astle, Charles (Chuck) W. Curry and Dale Fouse; and four siblings, Paul E. Davis, Joanne Davis Bower, Naomi Davis Giffen and Elizabeth (Bette) Davis Sweeney.

Erma was known to share many memories of growing up in a large family and caring for her brothers and sisters in the 1920's and 1930's. Clearly, Erma's survival instinct began early in life with the many challenging and humorous situations of a large family. At times, she was defending herself against older siblings, at other times she was responsible for caring for younger siblings.

Erma attended Ripley Grade School of Ripley, W.Va., Neale Jr. High of Vienna and graduated from Parkersburg High School with the Class of 1934. Her favorite class was math and she also enjoyed being a part of the Glee Club.

Erma was employed by Woolworth's Five and Dime Store, American Viscose Co. and the Internal Revenue Service. It was always important to Erma that her sons were well cared for. Erma was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church since 1959, and a member in good standing of the Daughters of the American Revolution, James Wood Chapter, where she served on several committees.

Erma enjoyed caring for her flowers, especially her daffodils. She enjoyed spending time with and sharing special moments with her many friends and neighbors throughout her life. She was quickly adopted as "Grandmother" by the younger children in her neighborhood. At home, she enjoyed cooking, playing games, reading, collecting coins, doing crossword puzzles, holding garage sales and playing Bunko. She also enjoyed several road trips with her late husband, Dale Fouse, through the Western States. Erma was no stranger to Las Vegas and Atlantic City and thoroughly enjoyed her visits there.

Erma often expressed a special "thank you" to all her caregivers, especially Marcia Metz and Dori Lowers, who helped her to live out her natural life at home on Circle Drive in Belpre and at Wyngate Assisted Living in Vienna.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, with the Rev. Warren Dove and the Rev. John A. Bower officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Parkview United Methodist Church, 2210 Fairview Ave., Parkersburg, WV 26101-3826.
