Richard "Dick" Bennett was born around 1834 as per the 1850 Census to parents Braxton Bennett and his wife Martha Hopps.

There are multiple Richard Bennetts who were CSA Soldiers from GA and FL. Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Vol 3 Pg 19 states he died single in FL and a photo of 3 Bennett brothers states Dick Bennett died a CSA Soldier.

I believe he was Richard Bennett who enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 2nd Florida Infantry Regiment on 23 May 1861 at Newnansville, FL, approximately 1.5 miles northeast of Alachua, FL. Other muster roll cards state he enlisted at Jacksonville, FL. One of his 1st Cousins, Jacob Bennett, lived in Newnansville, FL as per the 1860 Census and also joined Company B of the 2nd Florida Infantry Regiment.

He enlisted in Florida, but he died in Richmond, VA hospital of disease on 3 Oct 1861. According to a Historian at Richmond National Battlefield, Richard Bennett was among the first soldiers buried in the Confederate Soldiers section of Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, because his burial site is Section A, Row A, Grave #056. Approximately 17,000 Southern men would follow him into the sacred soil at that parcel of hallowed ground.
