Confederate records indicate that Luke R. CRAWFORD served in Company G, Barbiere's Battery Alabama Calvary during the Civil War. Details of his military service are unknown at this time. Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion consisted of Companies "A"-"E" (probably Capt. John C. Brown's, Capt. J. M. Clifton's, Capt. Dawson's, Capt. Thomas J. Goldsby's, and and Capt. Thomas K. Truss' companies), "F" (Capt. Andrew W. Bowie's), and "G" (Capt. P. L. Griffitts).

The following details are known about his unit, Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion, Local Defense Troops [Alabama Reserves]. Major Joseph Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion was organized in 1864 from several independent companies which had themselves been created as supporting forces for the Conscript Reserves. The battalion served principally in central Alabama during the fall and winter, 1864-1865, and it was first assigned (1 Nov 64) to Armistead's Cavalry Brigade, District of Central Alabama, until January 1865. The unit was headquartered at Wilsonville, AL (Feb 65) and was reported as serving with the Alabama Reserves with six companies ("A"-"F"). It was assigned to, and included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana by Lt. Gen'l Richard Taylor at Citronelle, AL, on 4 May 1865.

By the birth of Henry P. CRAWFORD in 1868 the CRAWFORD family had returned to Georgia. In the 1870 Coweta County Georgia census Luke R. CRAWFORD age 41 is listed as a farmer. Harris BEST lived in Coweta County Georgia and died their about 1852. He was married to Temperance SLAUGHTER. Harris had a will in Newnan, Georgia. His father's name was John BEST from North Carolina. Temperance may have been related to the SLAUGHTER family that attended Bethel Methodist Church near Senoia, Georgia. Harris and Tempy had 7 children. The relationship between the CRAWFORD and BESS (BEST) families is unknown at this time.

The 1880 census shows Luke CRAWFORD age 50 living in Cleburne County Alabama making his living as a farmer. Elizabeth G. age 41 and born in Georgia is recorded as his wife. Four children are in the household (3 sons and 1 daughter), three oldest children were born in Georgia and the youngest in Alabama. Six additional individuals are listed in the CRAWFORD household in 1880. These include two stepdaughters, Jane H. (14) and Olivia C. (12) SMITH, born in Alabama.
