John Grass' first son was Gleskauha, Owns Spotted Horses, but known in school and church records as "John Grass, Jr.", the first of the Grass dynasty of first songs to be white-man educated. He died in 1901 after a long illness, at the age of thirty-three. He never held the chieftaincy although he was trained for it.

John was married Isabelle Grass (B1868) in 1890. They had two children from this union. Mary Grass (1891) and Annie Grass (1893).

John Married Annie Alkire on Jan 1 1896.

Owns Spotted Horses' son, Hehaka Mani, Walking Elk, known in school and army records as 'Albert Grass' was killed in action July 18, 1918 in France, near Soissons. He was buried in Romagne Cemetery, Franc. Reburied at Cannon Ball, North Dakota, his body being brought home by Captain A. B. Welch. Albert Grass was cited "for gallantry in action and especially meritorious services. Entitled to wear a silver star".
