Elodie was a member of one of Huntsville's oldest families and granddaughter of a former governor of the state. Her mother was the granddaughter of Colonel Joel Lewis who fought in the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.

Elodie and sister, Virginia ran a private school for girls and boys out of the home at 421 Eustis Street. Elodie taught piano, vocal music, French and "Fancy" dancing. Elodie continued to run the school after Virginia died in 1911.

Graveside services were conducted.
