Benjamin was the first of seven children born to John W. and Isabella (French) Dixon and one of two children born in New Brunswick. His other five siblings were either born in Maine or East Boston where his father worked as a Cooper, probably as an allied craftsman in the ship building industry.

Benjamin worked as a clerk in the dry goods trade and married Anna E. Irons in Rhode Island on Aug. 25, 1873.

Benjamin was a patient at the Westboro State Hospital for the Insane when he died at age 44 due to "general paresis and exhaustion." His burial was in the family lot at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain.
