The Elkhart Weekly Review July 3, 1909
John Paul Black died at Clark Hospital at 5:30am today from the effect of burns and scalds he received on June 23. Mr. Black was employed by the Lake Shore as a boiler washer’s helper. On June 23, he went into the pit under an engine and opened the washout plug at the bottom of the boiler. Three or four barrels of scalding hot water rushed out, with considerable force by an accumulation of steam and Black was knocked down and lay in a semi-conscious condition in the mud in the bottom of the pit until rescued by other employees. His left leg and side were badly scalded and both hands were less severely burned.
He was taken to Clark Hospital, where he seemed to be doing well until Sunday, when fever developed. On Tuesday he became delirious and death ensued this morning. Arrangements were made for a private burial in Grace Lawn cemetery at 9 am tomorrow. There will be no service. The Lake Shore Company will pay the funeral expenses. Mr. Black was twenty-nine years old and is survived by a wife and two children in Hungary. He has a brother living in South Bend.
