ALGER – At her home in New London,
Ohio, Mary Alger, wife of Charles Alger.
Funeral services at the Baptist Church,
Thursday, at one o'clock P. M.

It appears that Mary was an unwed mother,
and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in
March 1868 when she was 25 years old.
It doesn't matter, no one cares, God rest
her soul.

From census records, it appears that Mary
was born in 1843 and had a twin brother
Essex Call, 1843-1859 but nothing is known
about him. Fortunately though, Mary can
be tracked through census records:

1850 CENSUS - CLARKSFIELD, HURON COUNTY, OHIO
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Essex Call Male 48 New York
Mary Call Female 40 New York
Sarah Call Female 18 Ohio
Elizabeth Call Female 16 Ohio
Abigail Call Female 14 Ohio
Noble C Call Male 11 Ohio
William Call Male 9 Ohio
Essex J Call Male 7 Ohio
Mary A Call Female 7 Ohio
Samuel Call Male 4 Ohio
Harriet Call Female 0 Ohio

Couldn't find Mary for certain in the 1860
census. However, I found a Mary E Call, 16,
in the following family:

1860 CENSUS – DELAWARE, DELAWARE COUNTY, OHIO
------------------------------------------------------------------------
John J Davis Male 40 Wales
Catharine Davis Female 40 Wales
Gaylord Davis Male 15 Virginia
Wm Davis Male 12 Virginia
Mary Davis Female 10 Ohio
Owen Davis Male 8 Ohio
Anna Davis Female 5 Ohio
Clara Davis Female 2 Ohio
Mary E Call Female 16 Ohio
George Scott Male 20 New York
Wm Davis Male 20 Wales
Jane Owens Female 76 Wales

Mary's parents Essex Call and Mary (Town) Call
died 1859 and 1851 respectively, so that
essentially left the children Mary 16, Essex
16, Samuel 14 and Harriet 10 as "orphans".
I'm sure the children were split up and
taken in by relatives and friends, however
it stands to reason that 16 year old Mary
may have gone 80 miles southwest to
Delaware, Ohio to help out with taking
care of the Davis children and giving herself
a place to live. Until someone can prove
differently, let's leave Mary living and
sheltering in the 1860 census in Delaware,
Ohio.

1870 CENSUS – NEW LONDON TOWNSHIP, HURON COUNTY, OHIO
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zebulon Brundage Male 50 New York
Sarah Brundage Female 43 Ohio
W R Brundage Female 17 Ohio
Z C Brundage Female 14 Ohio
Mary Call Female 35 Ohio
Nellie Call Female 2 Ohio
Matilda Brundage Female 76 Connecticut

Mary is shown as 35, however she is really 27,
let's assume the enumerator made a mistake.
However, that IS Mary and her daughter IS
Nellie Call, 2 years old.

To help certify things, also found in records is
the actual marriage record of Charles M Alger
to Mary Call on June 25, 1874 in Huron County,
Ohio.

This then leads to the following, and unfortunately,
the final census for Mary (Call) Alger:

1880 CENSUS – NEW LONDON, HURON COUNTY, OHIO
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Charles Alger Self Male 48 New York, United States
Mary Alger Wife Female 38 Ohio, United States
Nellie Alger Daughter Female 12 Ohio, United States

Here Nellie Call is shown as Nellie Alger, Daughter,
but she is actually his step-daughter, although he
may have adopted her. Matters not.

This the last census for Mary because she passed
away eight years later in May of 1888 at 45 years old.

Again, dear Mary, God rest your soul.
