Jean Erskine, 79, of Creston died Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the Greater Regional Hospice House – HCI in Creston.

Celebration of Life service will be 1 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2018 at the Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Pastor Tony Thurston and Pastor Jerry Lewis will officiate.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston.

Open visitation 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Memorials can be given to the family to be determined. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com.

Jean LaRay Erskine, was born to Hazel Elizabeth (Clark) Lewis and Glen Lewis on May 14, 1939 in Panora, Iowa. After her birth mother’s death in January of 1941, she was adopted later that year, by Harold Olin Kindred and Vera Pearl (Jones) Kindred. Jean graduated from Zion High School 1957 and worked as a telephone operator for GTE.

Jean was united in marriage to James Howard Erskine on April 10, 1958 in Creston, Ia. They settled in the Creston area where she worked as an active homemaker and also a maid for three different motels in Creston. Additionally, Jean worked in a plastics factory, 10 years at the Green Valley Butcher Shop, 10 years with the Casey’s sandwich factory, retiring in 1996 due to breathing problems.

Jean was a member of the Mt. Zion Church, the Red Hat Society, the Southside Boosters, the Mountain Man Club and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years.

Jean is survived by three daughters; Debbie (Charlie) White and Laurie (Greg) Hull, both of Creston; Pamela Erskine (Bernie Etter) of Chariton; one son; Michael (Rhonda) Erskine of Creston; eight grandchildren, Erin (David) Peavler, Chanda (Bill Hahesy) Moreland, Cody and Megan (Nick Standley) Hull, Tyler Erskine, Casey Allison, Christal (Shawn McClellan) Waddingham, and Jacob Erskine; ten great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; three half-brothers, Jerry (Vernettee) Lewis of Cincinnati, Ohio, Allan (Elsa) Lewis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Ed (Donna) Lewis of Fairland, Oklahoma; and a half-sister, Charlotte Christe of Klemme, Iowa.

Jean was preceded in death by her birth parents, her adopted parents, her parents-in-law, Harold Erskine and Elizabeth Osborne, her husband Jim in 2010, her grandson Matt White, her infant brother Orville Allen Kindred, her brother Billie Lewis, as well as many other in-laws and loved ones.
