Enlisted 29 Jun 1861 in Boston as Corporal, and twice promoted.
Final Rank: Color SGT
Company C, 13th MA Volunteer Infantry
Fought in the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Killed in action at Gettysburg.

Disciplined for leaving the company briefly to visit friends without permission, while in Maryland, a few days before the Battle of Gettysburg .He tearfully begged the commanding officer to be allowed to carry the American flag into battle, and was rewarded with the honor once again.
Roland was an extremely popular and well loved soldier in the Company, known for reciting Shakespeare.

Body exhumed at Gettysburg, and sent to Boston on July 15
Funeral from Church of the Advent on July 17, 1863
Burial Forest Hills Cemetery (confirmed with office) as the first burial in a 7-person family lot.

There is a monument, dedicated to the 13th MA Infantry at Gettysburg, and the figure atop is that of Roland Morris, the Color SGT, and first to fall of the Company that day -1 July 1863.
Company C of the 13th were Boston young men from good circumstances, educated, and well read. Roland was enrolled in the University of Heidelberg at the time hostilities broke out. He quickly returned to Boston to enlist in the Union Army.
