Russell Sparks Abbott
October 11, 1934 - January 09, 2021

On Saturday, January 9th, 2021, Russell Sparks Abbott, loving husband, friend, brother-in-law and uncle, joined his bride in heaven. He was 86 years old.

Russell was born on October 11th, 1934 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Fred and Betty Abbott. He had an ideal childhood, growing up in the border town of Eagle Pass, where he learned to hunt and fish. He graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1953 and attended Texas A&M for a time before joining the Army in 1954. After his Honorable Discharge in 1956, he attended Southwest Texas State College on a football scholarship. This is where he met the love of his life, Bobbie Lois Jenkins, whom he married on April 19th, 1957.

After completing his degree, he taught in San Antonio, Pleasanton and Bracketville. Most notably, he was a Physical Education teacher for 20 years at Northwood Elementary School in San Antonio, where he fostered his life-long love of teaching and coaching. He completed his Master’s degree in Administration in 1972. After retiring in 1990, he returned to coaching at Palo Alto College, where he taught Lifetime Sports until 2001. He was lovingly referred to as “Coach Abbott” for the rest of his life.

In 2002, Russell and Bobbie moved to Blanco, Texas. Russell loved his town and enjoyed serving in his community. He and Bobbie were faithful volunteers with Meals on Wheels, delivering meals to those in need for many years. He was an active member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Blanco, Texas, where he served as Junior Warden.

Russell was a magnetic man with a wonderfully optimistic outlook on life. He was larger-than-life in both physical stature and charisma. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed meeting with his coffee group each morning and working out at the Gem of the Hills gym. He was a devoted husband, a loyal friend and a wonderful uncle to his four adoring nieces, whom he doted on throughout his life and whose lives he greatly impacted. He was not only a teacher by trade, but by nature, teaching his nieces many important things including, but not limited to, how to drive a car and how to dance!

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Bobbie Abbott, and is survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Sue Jenkins of Marble Falls, and his four nieces and their spouses and children.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 18th, at 2 o’clock p.m., at Blanco Cemetery in Blanco, Texas. All are welcome. Masks will be worn and social distancing will be observed.
