Mary Stingel Griggs, 94, passed away in Abilene, Texas on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.
She was born of February 17, 1926 in Sugarcreek to the late John Henry and Gladys E. (Lenhart) Stingel.
Mary grew up on the farm in Auburn Township in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She graduated from Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School. She received a Bachelors Degree in Education fro Heidelburg College in Tiffin, OH, and a Masters Degree from the University of Wyoming. Mary taught high school for 21 years. She married Lowell O. Wilson in 1973, and enjoyed 22 years together before Lowell passed away in 1995. She subsequently married C.N. (Smokey) Griggs in 1998. They were married for 22 years before Smokey passed on May 11, 2020.
Mary was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Sugarcreek for many years. She loved gardening, and had a passion for raising flowers, especially dahlias. Mary and Lowell, as well as Mary and Smokey, loved to travel, and put many miles on their motor coaches.
Her memories will be carried on by her loving family: sister Aletha J. Riedesel (Ray) of Hoquiam, WA; brothers, Voris H. Stingel (Donna) of Sugarcreek, OH, John C. Stingel (Judy) of Dover, OH, and Charles W. Stingel (Sue) of Warren, OH; and she will be missed by her 16 nieces and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a sister Miriam Stingel Miller (Don), and a nephew, Mitchell Miller.
Her final resting place will be alongside her parents at East Lawn Cemetery in Sugarcreek, OH. Arrangements were entrusted to Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
