John Barnes, son of John Barnes and Ann Jones, was born 1697 in Isle Of Wight County, Virginia, and died September 09, 1789 in Wayne, NC, USA.He married Christian Hare on 1739 in Wayne, North Carolina.
By 1740 he was in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was a member of the Toisnot Baptist Church in 1758. By 1769 he was in Dobbs/Wayne County, North Carolina.
John Barnes had a land grant in Dobbs County, North Carolina.
Grant number 7 was issued 19 October 1761 for 490 acres on the south side of the Great Swamp. It was near Edward Bass' line and Moses Manning. He also had land on the north side of the Great Swamp.

"Surveyed for John Barnes a tract of land containing four hundred and ninety acres lying in Dobbs County on the South side of the Great Branch including his improvements. Beginning at a water oak in the swamp 50 poles to a black gum Moses Manning corner thence with his line the same course 180 poles to a pine in his line thence east 340 poles to a pine thence North 230 poles to a red oak in Edward Bass line tothe beginning."

This land has been located as being just west of present day highway 117 between Fremont and Black Creek, North Carolina. The land lies north of Edmundson Road in Wayne County, in the Myrtle Spring Branch area. Edward Bass line was part of Basses Swamp that connected with Penright's Swamp north of Fremont. This was the location that Pasco Peelle sold land to William Newsom. Some of the children of William Newsom married the children of Simon Barnes.
In 1782, John Barnes divided part of his land between two of his sons: Samuel and Simon.

Notes from the Old Reporter: The Barnes family South of Contentnea Creek springs from John Barnes who was undoubtedly the son of John Barnes and wife Ann Jones of Isle of Wight. He was in Edgecombe County by 1740 and he and his wife Christian were members of Tosneot Baptist Church in 1758. They were living as early as 1769 in what is now Wayne County. He died the last of 1790 leaving Simon, Samuel, Benjamin, Elizabeth Daniel, Christian (married Isaac Farmer, Jr), Zilpha (married Joseph Farmer), Barsheba Holmes, Mary (married Joseph Daniel) and John Barnes, Jr.
