He was born Aug. 23, 1956, at Dallas, Texas, to James and Mary Bedell Cushing. He married Diane Schoolman-Wetter on Aug. 23, 1996, in Normal. She survives.
Also surviving are his stepfather, James Cloyd; one son. Matthew Robert Cushing; two grandsons, Trent and Alexander Donath; two stepdaughters. Tracy (Brad) Donath and Kim Wetter; two brothers, James Cushing II and Thomas (Amanda) Cushing; two stepbrothers ,Rick (Lu) Cloyd and Steve Cloyd; one stepsister, Jane (Scott) Neil; three nephews, James (Angie) Cushing III, Dan (Alicia) Cushing and Alex Cushing; and one niece, Claire Cushing.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Cushing-Cloyd; his father, James Cushing; and a half sister, Rozanne Sullivan.
Robert worked for Mitsubishi Motors North America for the past 18 years. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1975. He served in the U.S. Army in the 3rd Battalion, 36th Infantry, and he served overseas in Germany.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Robert enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and Indy car racing; and he was a die-hard and faithful Dallas Cowboys fan.
