ROME - Frank L. Abbott, 88, Civil War veteran, and for more than forty years a merchant in this city, died last evening at his home at 517 N. Washington Street. He had been in poor health for nearly two years and had been ill since Wednesday with a severe cold.

At the age of 18 Mr. Abbott enlisted in Company L, 117th Engineers, and served during the Civil War. He was promoted to the rank of corporal. He witnessed the surrender at Appomattox Court House and also recalled a conversation with Abraham Lincoln at Richmond shortly before the Great Emancipator was assassinated.
