Martha Ella (Bailey) Murphy, 68, of Girard, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021 in Girard, Kansas.

She was born August 20, 1952 in Eureka, Kansas to Charles Clayton and Emily
(Schwabe) Bailey
. She grew up in Eureka, Kansas and attended Eureka schools, graduating from Eureka High School in 1970.

Martha graduated from Kansas State University in 1974 with a bachelors
degree in Home Economics Education. Following graduation, Martha taught
home science in Australia and traveled through New Zealand, Asia, and
Europe. Upon her return to the United States, she began working as the
Crawford County Extension 4-H Agent, serving from 1976 to 1983.

Martha married Steven Warren Murphy on August 26,1978 in Girard, Kansas. He
survives of the home.

Following several years of raising children and substitute teaching, Martha
became the youth director at The Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg, Kansas. She
re-entered K-State Research and Extension as the Crawford County Expanded
Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) agent in 1991.

Martha served on the Crawford County United Way Board from 1997 to 2003,
serving as the president in 2002. She also served as the chair of Live Well
Crawford County, in addition to numerous other coalitions.

Martha was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Kansas where she
served as an elder. She also was an active member of PEO Chapter BG of
Girard, Kansas for 42 years, serving as president from 1990-1991.

Martha was named a Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Woman of Distinction
in 2016 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community.

Upon retirement in 2018, Martha enjoyed participating in farm work with her
husband, spending time with her grandchildren, flower gardening, and
visiting with friends on her porch.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Jeff Murphy and his
wife Sabrina of Girard, Kansas; and a daughter, Molly Chase and her husband
Christopher of Newton, Kansas; six grandchildren, Owen Murphy, Aubree Murphy,
Ellie Murphy, Asher Murphy, Daniel Chase, and Joshua Chase; and a sister,
Jeannette French and her husband Jerry of Fort Collins, Colorado; and her
mother-in-law, Marjorie Murphy of Girard, Kansas. She was preceded in death by
her parents; a brother, Clifford Bailey; and father-in-law, Warren Murphy.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday January 22, 2021 at The
Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Kansas with Pastor K.O. Noonoo officiating.
Masks and social distancing will be required at the service. The service
will be live streamed via the church Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Graveside Service at Girard Cemetery will be immediately following the
Memorial Service. Friends may call on Thursday January 21, 2021 between
4-8pm at the Smith-Carson Wall Funeral Home in Girard, Kansas. Donations in honor of
Martha may be made to Kansas P.E.O. Sunflower Grant or Crawford County Fair Association.
