Elam never married and was subject to going off into trances or dreams and staying in this condition for days. Family stories about Uncle Elam related that he thought he had died and gone to heaven, he was in a coma for 40 days but knew what was happening around him. Years ago there was an article in the Sedalia paper about his experience. He finally died in one of these trances.
