Elam Lovelace went west as a young man some say to Colorado and Wyoming. He was a carpenter by trade. The first time he came home was 1887/88. He began a two story house for his father on Back Bone Road, past the Lovelace School House. Before the house was finished, he ate a hearty supper and went to bed early in the evening. Early in the morning he was found dead. He was 55 years old as registered in his mother's bible. The bible is in the Floyd Lovelace's hands last account.

Elam never married and was subject to going off into trances or dreams and staying in this condition for days. Family stories about Uncle Elam related that he thought he had died and gone to heaven, he was in a coma for 40 days but knew what was happening around him. Years ago there was an article in the Sedalia paper about his experience. He finally died in one of these trances.
