World War II, Korea, Vietnam
William Dubel passed away from the complications of COVID-19 pneumonia at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by father William Respondek, stepfather Joseph Dubel, mother Agnes Kolodzie Dubel, sister Joyce Ann Anderson and daughter Patricia Saunders. To his surviving family, he was a caring husband of 74 years, father and grandfather.
After graduating from Burbank HS in San Antonio, he enlisted in the US Army. He was a disciplined person in a 23-year military career, first as an Army drill sergeant preparing recruits for the Cold War and Korean conflict and later as a commissioned officer in the US Air Force with stints in Saudi Arabia, Japan, Guam and the Philippines. During this service, he earned the US Army Marksmanship Sharpshooter Award. He also received the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Award for his dedicated work with the OSD.
After his military retirement, he continued duty to country in the federal Civil Service for the next 23 years with radar installation responsibilities in Japan, Korea and the Pacific islands. After retiring from the Civil Service, he became a full-time rancher raising Santa Gertrudis cattle on his 28-acre ranch. He also served 30 years with the Wilford Hall Volunteer Auxiliary and the Thunderbird Hills Neighborhood Association. His ranch work, stable 74-year marriage, personal discipline and Polish ancestry are all credited with his longevity.
Besides ranch work, Bill enjoyed flounder fishing at Aransas Pass, TX. He was also an accomplished arborist with a particular flair for grafting south Texas pecans. He and his wife were fortunate to make many trips to US military reunions and other memorable trips to Hawaii, Italy and Australia.
Rest in peace, sir.
