Roger was born December 20, 1936, the son of Leonard and Irene (Keller) Backes, on the family farm northwest of Glenburn, in Ensign township. Roger was raised and educated in Glenburn, graduating from Glenburn High School in 1955.

Roger married Connie Schimmelpfennig on August 19, 1957. They lived in Glenburn until 1991, when he retired and they moved to Minot. Through the years, he was an entrepreneur owning Roger's Market in Glenburn and Backes Insurance Agency in Minot/Glenburn. After retiring, he worked part-time as a courtesy driver at Westlie Motors

Connie passed away October 1, 2013.

Roger was a member of St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Glenburn and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Over the years, he has loved his sports; with basketball being his favorite. He was a good high school basketball player and really loved following his kids and grandkids in their sporting events and didn't miss many of their games, if any....He has three sons and one daughter. After they all graduated, his love for sports continued. You could see him at many Minot State basketball games and a lot of the football games. Also, he attended many Glenburn, Bishop Ryan, and Minot High basketball games.

Roger would love to spend time with his family and his coffee group.
