Albert Burnette Afraid Of Hawk was always asked to cook for give-aways, powwows, funerals and other events that drew many people. He had a skill in cooking that was much appreciated and he never refused any who asked for his help.

Cooking was but one of his skills. He worked as a ranch hand for area farmers, and for the Cheyenne River Standing Rock Police Department as a deputy with Clifford Demery, Robert Iron Wing and Kenny Traversie. He also worked for the TWEP Program for a number of years with Clifford Demery and his crew.

In May of this year 2007 he suffered a heart attack and was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D. He had triple bypass surgery and returned to Cherry Creek to be with his daughter. Albert never improved after surgery. Labor Day morning he was taken to the Eagle Butte Indian Health Service Hospital and again returned home.

On Sept. 23 he again suffered a heart attack and was flown to Medcenter One, where he entered the Spirit World on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at 7 p.m. with his daughter and granddaughter Julie by his side. He was 65 years old.

Albert was born Sept. 6, 1942, in Oelrichs to Maurice and Olive (Premeaux) Afraid Of Hawk. He attended Holy Rosary Mission School and then came to Cheyenne River to stay with his aunt Ester Between Lodges Buck Elk Thunder and his uncle Daniel Afraid Of Hawk. He was a bull rider and a bronc rider.

In 1967 he met Beatrice Charging Eagle and they were married. On May 12, 1969, their daughter Debra Sue was born.

"Albert was special to everyone in different ways," his daughter Debra said.

Albert left behind his daughter, Debra Charging Eagle of Cherry Creek; granddaughters, Julie Yardley and Allison Charging Eagle, both of Eagle Butte, and Savannah Charging Eagle of Cherry Creek; adopted brother, Cedric Bear Flys Over Water of Cherry Creek; uncle, Daniel Afraid Of Hawk of Cherry Creek; and cousins, Keeler Condon, Harold Condon, Monte Condon, Julie Condon, Mary Buck Elk Thunder, Bernadine Condon, Geno Condon and Darrel Condon.

Albert's parents, Maurice and Olive Afraid Of Hawk, and other family members and relatives preceded him in death.

The funeral for Albert was Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the UCC Church in Cherry Creek. Deacon Ted Knife and Deacon Harold Condon officiated. Burial was at the UCC Cemetery in Cherry Creek under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Casketbearers were Danny Hayes, Ivan Westover, Frenchy Demery, Willard Demery, Mark Fire Cloud, Marlin Yellow Owl, David Crow Ghost, Rocky Afraid Of Hawk and John Afraid Of Hawk.

Honorary bearers were Dani Dean and all the Social Services staff and all his other friends and relatives who had made an impact on his life.

An all night wake service began Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, at the church in Cherry Creek.
