Heather was also known as Martha in her youth. She was born at The Coopers in Chiselhurst. She died of a cerebral hemmorrhage at Brooklands Nursing Home in Haywards Heath, Sussex. Per the Chiselhurst Society, Heather was cremated at Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton on 20 April 1954 but it wasn't until 1 September 1955 that her ashes were scattered (location wasn't identified).

Heather and her Edwardian era wardrobe are the subject of the book LONDON SOCIETY FASHION 1905-1925 THE WARDROBE OF HEATHER FIRBANK, by Cassie Davies-Strodder and Jenny Lister, published by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A Publishing).
