Edward Joseph Mullaney

Cumberland—Edward Joseph “Red” Mullaney, 87, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday January 24, 2021, at his home.

Born in Mt. Savage, MD, on March 28, 1934, he was the son of the late Thomas B. and Ethel (Smith) Mullaney. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas B. Mullaney, II and wife Betty, Dennis Mullaney and wife Pat, and John C. Mullaney and wife Marion; sisters, Colleen Aaron and husband Joseph, and Mary Pat Hill and husband Tom; and brothers-in-law, Wilfred Crowe, and Jack Holliday.

Ed was a graduate of Fort Hill High School. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Navy in 1951. He served aboard the USS LST-532; USS Forrestal CVA-59, where he was a plank owner, and was part of one of the first crews aboard; and the USS Eugene Green DDR-711, where he had land duty in Bainbridge, MD.

After being discharged from the Navy, Ed worked for Lever Brothers in Baltimore, MD. He then was employed by the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., and the International Chemical Workers’ Union and United Food and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICWU, UFCW). Ed retired as vice president of the union in 1997, and relocated to Cumberland, MD.
Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vera (Murphy) Mullaney; son, Shawn Mullaney; daughter, Kathy Mullaney Price and husband Greg; grandchildren, Alan Mullaney, and Ashley Darr and husband Mike; great-grandsons, Michael and Conner Darr; brothers, Michael Mullaney and wife Linda, and Charles Mullaney and wife Pat; sister, Margaret Hook and husband George; and sisters-in-law, Pat Crowe, and Lyla Holliday.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Sunday, January 31, 2021, from 2-7 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, February 1, 2021, at 1 p.m. with Deacon David Conley officiating.
