Born June 3rd, 1940 in Wilmington, DE to Ralph and Blanch Aiken, he was the oldest of 9 children.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many.
Bob enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers at Celebrations on Market with his son and grandson. He was a frequent visitor of the New Castle Farmers Market, where you could find him on most weekends in the Sock Outlet with friends Lorie and Rick. He also spent much of his time in New Jersey with his dear friend Jennifer and her family.
Bob joined the US Marine Corps on January 22nd, 1962 and was honorably
discharged on May 21st, 1966, serving 4 years, 4 months and 4 days. He returned to Delaware and started a career at New Castle County in 1971. He first worked for the Parks and Recreation Dept. and retired after nearly 30 years of dedicated service as a Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of the NCC Federal Credit Union since 1972, serving on the Board of Directors. After his retirement, he remained a daily fixture at the Credit Union where he considered Meredith, Amy, and the rest of the ladies, part of his extended family. He was an active member of the Delaware FOP and American Legion.
Bob was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Blanch Aiken, his sister Diane Aiken, his brothers Bill, LeeRoy, John, Albert, his daughter-in-law Pam Aschenbach, and his companion dog, Dutchess.
Bob is survived by his son John Aschenbach and wife Bonnie Sue of Arizona, his daughter Cathy Blackshear of Wilmington, DE, and his son Robert R. Aiken, Jr and wife Deborah of Wilmington, DE. Other survivors include sisters, Virginia Aiken, Donna Aiken, and brother George Aiken and wife Diane, granddaughters Katie Jean Green and husband Kieth of MN, Dana Mancinelli and Danyella Mancinelli,
both of Wilmington, DE and grandsons Charles Blackshear and Robert R. Aiken III of Wilmington, DE, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Saturday, February 6th at St. Matthews Church on Maryland Ave, Wilmington DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11:30 AM.
Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on February 16th at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
