Anders Olof Jonsson was born on the Dahl farm in Sweden, on the island of Gotland in Grotlingbo. His parents were Johan Niklas Hansson Dahls, 1795–1879, and Christina Catherine (Stina Cajsa) Pehrsdotter, 1807–1890. He had 6 brothers (one died as a baby) and 2 sisters. Andrew (or Andy) left Sweden in the late 1860s with several brothers, changing his surname to Dahlquist. One brother moved to Australia. Andrew sailed to Boston, earning money as a tailor to continue his journey around the horn of South America. He tried his hand in Gold Country and worked in San Francisco for the railroad. Sailing up the west coast of America, he encountered the beautiful Washington Territory and decided to stay. He built a homestead and then went back to Sweden to marry his sweetheart, Olivia Oman, on 12 July 1871 in Grötlingbo, Gotland, Sweden. He brought her to his homestead and they began a family. He was this author's great-great grandfather.
