Robert was born in Calcutta on the 11th December 1858 and baptised there on the 23rd January 1859 in St Andrew's Church. He was the son of Robert Henderson and Anne Charlotte Henderson.
Robert was educated at Bedford Grammar School and Fettes College, then Edinburgh University followed by St Mary's Hospital, London where he qualified in medicine in 1882.
He entered the Army Medical Service in 1884, served in Sudan in 1885 and was Mentioned in Despatches serving in Burma from 1886 to 1891. He was on the North West Frontier between 1891 and 1898, and then in the Boer War 1901 to 1902. He was appointed Director of Medical Service in India between 1908 and 1912.
Robert was Secretary to the Royal Veterinary Hospital at Netley, Honorary Physician to the King in 1911 and served with the New Zealand Medical Services from 1915 to 1919.
He was invested as a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1917 and as a Knight Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1919.
Robert retired with the rank of Temporary Surgeon General in 1919, and died in the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, London on the 5th October 1924. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery four days later on the 9th October 1924.
In 2013 his medals, various papers and personal effects sold at auction for £4,000.
