Alex Doss Erwin Sr was born on October 9, 1890 in Duck River, Hickman County, Tennessee, the son of Theodric Henry "T H" Erwin (1853–1920) and Sue Ella (Miller) Erwin (1857–1925). {His published obituary lists him born in Shady Grove, Hickman County.}

He was married in 1921 to Margaret W Horton (26 Jun 1889–25 Feb 1965), who was born in Paint Lick, Kentucky and died in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee and was the daughter of Thomas J Horton and Sarah Bell (Runner) Horton (ca Aug 1867- ).

As a young man Alex was a fireman with L&N Railroad before being employed as the purchasing agent at Victor Chemical Works about 1926, and he retired about 1955. He was also a past master of Claiborne Masonic Lodge, F&AM and a past patron of the West Nashville Order of the Eastern Star.

Living at 4807 Elkins Avenue in Nashville, Alex was 71 years old and married when he died on February 26, 1962 of "Terminal hypostatic pneumonia due to congestive heart failure" at Davidson County Hospital, where he had been for a little more then two years.

Survivors included his wife, son Alex D Erwin Jr in Atlanta, Georgia and three grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on February 28th at Pettus, Owen & Wood Funeral Home, and burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
