Marlys was born on a farm in Milaca, MN, and attended a one-room schoolhouse as a little girl. Later, she moved to St. Paul and attended high school at Mechanic Arts, graduating in 1952. A strong and independent person, she was only 16 when she and her sister Gwen had their own apartment and supported themselves.

While working at the candy counter of the Riviera Movie Theatre in St. Paul, Marlys met Carter (Rick) Anderson, who was dashingly handsome in his usher outfit. The two married at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul in 1956.

When Rick was in the Army, they moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, and daughter Sue was born there in 1957. They later moved to North St. Paul, MN, where Sue has many fond memories of roller skating with Marlys in the basement of their house on Longview Drive.

A job transfer took them to Cincinnati, OH, where daughter Lori was born in 1969. They moved back to Minnesota shortly after, settling in Maplewood. Lori will always remember playing badminton with Marlys in the backyard while the family cat chased the birdie back and forth.

Throughout their marriage, Marlys and Rick took a lot of fun trips, some of the most memorable to Las Vegas with Sue and her husband Scott.

After all, Marlys loved to spend time with her family. She was a formidable opponent in the various card games they played together over the years. She and Rick played weekly card games for many years with their siblings and their spouses, and the tradition continued with Sue, Scott, Lori and Lori's husband Mark. There was never a family card game without a little bit of ribbing and a whole lot of laughter.

Marlys was blessed with three wonderful grandchildren--Jennie, Nick and Louis, as well as three wonderful great-grandchildren--Sean, Victor and Theo. You can see a bit of her in each of them. Throughout the years, she also was the "mom" to various cats, all of whom she spoiled. But none so much as the current cat, "Freddie", who misses sleeping on her feet.

While Marlys was 100% Swedish, she would not touch lutefisk with a 20-foot pole and refused to even entertain the idea of eating anything that ever had fins or gills. If it smelled even slightly "fishy", she wanted nothing to do with it. Of course, this did not stop her two sons-in-law from attempting to get her to eat herring and other delicacies.

Marlys lived a great life, and she leaves her family with many happy memories. We'll hold her in our hearts until we meet again.
