He was a fireman for the Westmoreland Coal Company circa 1899. He served in this capacity for 18 months. He then entered the carpenter shop department of the same company, building and repairing mine cars and performing general carpenter work. He was promoted to the position of assistant electrician. He had the complete charge of all material for that department, and each day inspected all the machinery about the plant, fans, etc., before starting the same. He was faithful and conscientious in the performance of his duties, and was respected by his employers and co-laborers.
