The founder and past president of John L. Ashe Inc. men's clothing stores, he began with a shoe department in the A. & L. August store in the 800 block of Main street in 1920.

A native of Guntown, Miss., he arrived here shortly after serving in the Navy during World War I. In 1927 he opened his own shoe shop, and gradually added men's hats and furnishings to it until 1935, when he opened a complete men's clothing store. The company grew and now has two locations.
