He attended a one room school and then Stuart Public School before joining the Army in 1954 where he proudly served in Korea as Specialist 1 until his honorable discharge. Prior to his service in Korea, he was engaged to Barbara Flannigan. Upon his return, Jim worked on the family farm. On October 18, 1956 he and Barbara were joined in marriage and began their life together. To this union four children were born.
He loved farming and ranching and while working the farm also worked as a truck driver for several years.
Jim enjoyed time with his family, tending to his garden and lawn and he loved fishing year-round. He shared his love with many friends, his kids, and grandkids. He wouldn’t pass up a friendly card game or a fish fry. He always loved to see the joy he brought to people with his gift of homemade dill pickles!
Recently Jim and Barb moved to Kearney so they could be closer to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife Barbara (Flannigan) Friedel, son Tim Friedel (Janice), of Kearney, daughters Sue Maxson (Byron) of Kearney, Lea Jane Friedel of Kearney, Marcee Johnson (Tom) of Norfolk, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Three sisters, Eileen Moss of Stuart, Dorothy Flannigan (Dan) of Elkhorn and Anita Shald of Yakima, WA
His grandchildren Jamie (Friedel) Bentz, Timothy Friedel, Dustin Maxson, Jared Maxson, Kylee Johnson, Derek Johnson and Skylar Johnson will serve as pall bearers.
