There are variances as to his date of birth. On the California, U.S., Death Index, 1940-1997 it's listed as 10/28/1888. On the U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 it's listed as 10/25/1888, as it is also on the U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942. However, on the Pennsylvania, U.S., Federal Naturalization Records, 1795-1931 it's written as 11/24/1888.

Note, also his first name is given as Wasyl on the naturalization form, but was anglicized to Walter. His declared place of birth was Huszatyu-Galicia, Poland. This seems to correspond to Husiatyń, in the region known as Galicia. He was said to have spoken "Ukrainian". The declared 'Poland' may well be in the Ukraine. Family members in Pennsylvania are buried in Saint John Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.

See memorial ID 178972187 for his brother Joseph Hodiak.

Re: place of birth. In an extensive interview in The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, Maryland)19 Nov 1944, SunPage 30, Walter said the following:

"On Nov. 27, 1912 , mama and I arrived from the Ukraine. We had met a couple of years before in Bohemia and eight months after we had landed in New York, we were married. We went to Pittsburgh to live, and on April 16, 1914, Johnnie was born."

The title of the piece was "Hodiak's Old Folks Come West".
