CEO and china expert Alan B. Reed, an expert on Pickard China who authored a book on the subject, died Thursday of non-Hodgkins lymphoma in St. Francis Hospital of Evanston. He was 68 and had lived in Oak Park for most of his life. Mr. Reed was a 1947 graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School. In 1958 he joined the electrical manufacturing firm Wood-head Industries Inc., which is now in Deerfield but at the time was known as the Daniel Woodhead Co. in Chicago. He started as a draftsman and worked his way up to chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Throughout his career, he maintained a balance between business leadership and his "extraordinary warmth, sensitivity and personal grace," said Mark DeWinter, Woodhead's current chairman and CEO. Outside of his career, Mr. Reed was an amateur artist who collected and researched Pickard China, a collectible hand-painted china manufactured in Chicago beginning in the late 1800s. He was a recognized expert on the subject and wrote the Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China, published in 1995. He is survived by his wife, . Betty; two daughters, Mary Beth Thompson and Mary Therese Reed; three sons, Michael, Mark, and Colin; a sister, Jessica; a brother, Robin; and two grandsons. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Dreschsler-Brown Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary of Celle Church, 1428 S. Wesley Ave., Berwyn.
