Dan Terry Barnes, Sr., 94, of Live Oak, Florida, passed away at Suwannee Valley Hospice Care Center in Lake City, Florida. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on January 31, 1926. Dan left high school in the 11th grade and joined the U.S. Navy, nine days after his seventeenth birthday. He served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, both shipboard on the aircraft carrier USS Sargent Bay and shore bases. After the war, he married his beloved wife, Frances McQueen Crosby and they set out on a long and adventurous life together. Dan completed his high school requirements was admitted to, and graduated from, the University of Florida with a degree in Building Construction in 1953. Dan began his career with general contractors, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and then worked for NASA in Huntsville, Alabama, and transferred to Titusville, Florida. He retired from NASA in 1984. Dan became a pilot in 1972 and was known for his love of flying, which is now shared by many in his family. After retiring in 1984 he moved with his wife to Kitty Hawk Estates Flying Community in Live Oak, Florida. There he and Fran enjoyed many years together and also spent time in Ninilchik, Alaska. Dan was the “ultimate volunteer”, coaching little league teams, helping Boy Scout troops, teaching others to read, and volunteering with many different flying organizations. Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Crosby Barnes on August 18, 2015, and his son, Kenneth Richard Barnes on December 25, 2020.
