On Monday, February 15, 2021, Richard Edward Dowdy Sr. of Petersburg, WV passed away peacefully at his home, with his longtime friend and caregiver Norma Jean Rader, and daughter Nancy by his side. Richard enjoyed life to the fullest and loved his family and friends deeply. He shared freely of his time and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to others. Richard was a spirited conversationalist, especially when it came to reflecting on his days in the military and communicating the events of that time. He was sharp, quick witted, and engaging until the very end, and never hesitated to express his opinion or point of view. He was masterful at building and carpentry, an avid home gardener with a green thumb, and extremely skilled at researching genealogy. He looked forward to exercising, the lunchtime specials, and gathering with friends at the Petersburg Senior Center during his later years. Richard was an honorable and principled man, who will be missed by many.

Richard was born in Baltimore MD on April 28, 1923 and was the son of the late Henry David and Amanda Jane (Tharpe) Dowdy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear wife Anna Marjorie (Adams) Dowdy, son Richard Edward Dowdy Jr., brother Floyd Ivan Dowdy, and sister Thelma Louise Worthen.

Richard is survived by his daughter Nancy (Dowdy) Sisk and husband Robert of Petersburg, WV; sons William D. Dowdy of Linthicum Heights, MD, and Brian C. Dowdy of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren Grant K Sisk and wife Breein of Fairmont, WV, Morgan R Sisk and wife Kendall of West Chester, PA, Shana F Hull and husband Matthew of Troutville, VA; and six great grandchildren Raegan Sisk, Olivia Sisk, Kaylen Hull, Avery Sisk, Jaxon Sisk and Beau Hull.

Richard was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. He was a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, but left Poly early in November 1942 to join the Army Air Force and fight for his country during WWII. Richard attended Aircraft Armament school, Aviation Cadet training, Aerial Gunnery school, and Armorer Gunner training, and subsequently held the position of Staff Sergeant military policeman and tail gunner. Before his honorable discharge in October 1945, Richard successfully completed 51 missions as tail gunner on the heavy American bomber B-24 Liberator. In later years, Richard continued his patriotism by regularly attending annual 376th Heavy Bombardment Air Force reunions that were held at various locations across the US. In addition, he accomplished his 32nd degree as a Freemason of the Masonic Lodge, and held membership in the VFW Post #200, Hampstead, MD, as well as Petersburg WV Post #6454. Richard had a successful forty-two year long career with the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, where he held numerous positions including master gas fitter, appliance specialist, supervisor and technical instructor. Richard retired from BGE in 1985.

The funeral service at Schaeffer Funeral Home Inc., Petersburg WV, will be limited to immediate family, only. Interment will be at the Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville, WV, where he will join his beloved wife and son.
