He was a lifelong resident of Rushville, Missouri before moving to Atchison about 1956 due to health reasons. He was a farmer. He worked as a carpenter and had also worked for Smith Brothers Construction in the Rushville area. He purchased the old Rushville High School, removed the top floor and converted the building into a duplex where family members lived for a number of years. He was the husband of Lillie Crystal Jones Smith who died in 1945. He married Ethel (Lawhon) Mongomery December 4, 1946. Their marriage ended by divorce in December 1957.
He was survived by his sons, Willard and Harland, their wives, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
