In 1885, Mary Jane was taken to an insane asylum by her brother because she had had mental trouble for several years and she had become unmanageable. She was listed as an inmate at the Clinton County Poor Farm Register in 1887, 1888, 1889 and in Mar 1890, shortly before she died on July 31, 1890. She is not in the Clinton County death records, but most likely died at the Clinton County Poor Farm. Insanity appears to run in the Gilmore family (father's side) and Brafford family (mother's side). Mary's son, John Edward Ramsey had mental problems as did two of John Ed's children.
