BOONSBORO - John Harlan Bast Jr., 80, a lifelong resident of Boonsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Harlan Bast Sr. and Caroline K. Sparrow Bast.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi R. "Nonie" Snyder Bast, March 30, 1992.

He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

John was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a third generation funeral director and took over the Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro from his father and uncle in 1964.

John was a devoted member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro and a former member of the church council.

He was a member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association; the National Funeral Directors Association; and locally the B.P.O. Elks 378 in Hagerstown and was a supporter and former board member of Boonsboro Cemetery. As a youth, he performed with the Boonsboro Band, Hagerstown Municipal Band and various dance bands.

John is survived by one sister, Nancy J. Bikle and husband, Josef, of Boonsboro; nine nieces and nephews, Mark A. Bikle and wife, Marie, and Thomas E. Bikle and wife Lisha, all of Boonsboro, Gale Barnes and wife, Sue, of Keedysville, Deanna Mullendore and husband, John, Rodney Snyder and wife, Susan, and Jim Snyder and wife, Leigh, all of Clear Spring, Harold Hunsberger and wife, Lynn, of Mercersburg, Pa., Cynthia Miller of Winston Salem, N.C., and Chuck Snyder and wife, Tracy, of Van Nuys, Calif.; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday Oct. 21, 2007 at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph I. Donovan III will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday Oct. 20, 2007 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
