A native Texan, Fannie is descended from a veteran of the Texas War for Independence through her maternal grandmother, and a Union Civil War soldier from Kansas on her paternal side. Her grandfather was a (very) short-time Texas Ranger and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Her mother Alice Keath died very young, and she was raised with her father and step-family. Fannie's first husband, Daniel Benjamin Lewis, died in the influenza epidemic. Her first daughter "Bennie" was born after his death. She then married James Thomas Buckner, first cousin of her first husband , upon his return from his service in WWI, and had 5 more children.
