Mr William Hinton, Sr, died at his home in Avis last Thursday afternoon after a long illness of a complication of diseases. The deceased was a splendid man - a good citizen and had a host of relatives and warm personal friends in this county and Monroe. He was born at Greenville, Monroe county, Va, now West Virginia on May the 4th 1933 and was 77 years and one month old at the time of his death. He belonged to an old and prominent Virginia family, his father whose name was David Hinton having come to Monroe from Rockingham county, Virginia, in the early part of the last century. Mr Hinton lived in Monroe county until 1880 when he moved to Summers county and lived near Alderson until 1892 when he came to Hinton where he has since resided. He was a farmer and a civil engineer. He served with distinction in the Stonewall Brigade during the Civil War. In 1868 he was married to Miss Fannie Peck of Buffalo, Kanawha county, who with two sons Mr Murray D Hinton of this place and Mr W L Hinton, of Cincinnati, survive him. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters - David Hinton of Kansas and John M Hinton of Monroe, Mrs Sallie Cook of Texas and Mrs A W Bailey and Mrs A R Gwinn of Monroe. His remains were buried last Saturday in Hill Top cemetery after funeral services at the M E church south of this place by Rev Stephens.
Mr Hinton had been a member of the Methodist church for years. He was a quiet, unassuming man with noble qualities of mind and heart. We join the many friends of the bereaved family in extending to them our profound sympathies.
