Betty Jean Aarhus, 90, Sherwood, died Monday, March 1, 2021, at a Minot nursing home.
She was born September 24, 1930, northwest of Sherwood, just across the border in Saskatchewan, Canada, to Aubrey and Ula (Sturdivant) Harkness. After the death of her mother, the family moved to a farm west of Sherwood. She attended a country school and Sherwood High School. As a youngster, she served as a cook for threshing crews.
Betty married Olav “Ole” Aarhus in 1948. They farmed 13 miles west of Sherwood in Stafford Township, Renville County. Betty assisted with the farming operation and also had chickens, cows and a large garden. In 1968, they moved into Sherwood. Ole died April 3, 2007.
Betty was a member of United Methodist Church, Sherwood. She served on the Sherwood Ambulance Service and was the first nationally registered EMT in Sherwood. She drove the Renville County Stage, cooked at the café and also Northern Lights Supper Club. She also operated Pots and Pansies Greenhouse with her daughter. She loved gardening, snowmobiling, car races and arts and crafts.
Family: sons, Alan (Sonja) Aarhus, Bismarck, Wayne Aarhus, Sherwood, Glen Aarhus, Wilton, Kevin Aarhus, Jamestown; son-in-law, Ronald Tingelstad, Monticello, MN; grandchildren, Todd and Kale Tingelstad, Adam and Ryan Aarhus, and Shaun, Sheldon and Chris Aarhus; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by: her parents, Aubrey and Ula Harkness; husband, Olav “Ole” Aarhus; daughter, Evangeline Tingelstad; and brother, Elmer Harkness.
