Alton Charles Hartman was born to Y.A. and Margaret (O'Donnell) Hartman in Chicago, the older of two boys. Margaret died when Alton and his brother Harold were young. Y.A., a newspaperman, took his sons west, first to Missouri, then to Sioux City, Iowa. Alton grew up to be a salesman and lived in Boston and Philadelphia before returning to Chicago by 1942. He married Katherine Dimmel and they raised two boys, Ward S. Hagan, her son from a prior marriage, and Robert York Hartman. Their first child, daughter Altonette Margaret Hartman, died in infancy in 1927; a second daughter was stillborn in 1935.

Alton served in the U.S. Army during WWI. Per his son Robert, Alton was the personal assistant to Gen. Douglas MacArthur from 1917-18 and served him for one year.

Alton suffered a stroke in November 1977, just as his first great-grandchild was born, and died several weeks later in Chicago.

When Alton's son Robert died, he was cremated and his remains were buried in his father's plot, over his heart.
