EVART-Gladys Lucinda Squires, 81 of Evart, died at her home on Sunday, May 14, 2006 on Mothers Day after a lengthy illness from cancer. She was born Sept. 23, 1924, to Simon Nelson Dewitt and Gladys Pearl Marie Dow in Flint, Michigan. She married James Robert Squires on Sept. 3, 1940 in Barryton and she raised 5 of her 8 children on the family farm in Barryton. She was a charter member of the W.O.T.M. Evart Chapter No. 2260. She enjoyed bird watching, quilting and having and going to yard sales. Everyone called her "Ma" or "Grandma" and she was truly loved by all. She had previously lived in Mt. Pleasant where she and her husband owned and operated a small corner store. She loved spending time at their cabin in Mackinac City. Gladys lived in Evart, Reed City and Manton areas and a short time in Colorado. After retiring in Manton and after the loss of her husband moved back to the Reed City, Evart area to be closer to her children. She always had a little lap dog at her side and loved their companionship.
Surviving are five daughters, Arlene (Norm) Swarthout of Evart, Lucinda Pike of Evart, Joyce Turley of Coleman, Vicki (Alan) Austin of Reed City, Tomalou Squires of Cadillac; three sons, James (Rozella) Squires of Reed City, Larry (Shirley) Squires of Gillette, Wyoming and Kevin (Cynthia) Squires of Alamosa, Colorado; 22 granddaughters; 24 grandsons; 29 great-granddaughters; 32 great-grandsons; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Squires was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 48 years, James; brother, Albert Dewitt and half-sister Floyanna Maybee.
Services held Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 1:00 at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart, with Rev. Scott Farrell officiating. Burial at the East Fork Cemetery in Barryton, Fork Township, Mecosta County, Michigan.
