Daughter of Zenas Root and his wife, Lucie Lovejoy. Eleanor's parents married on 26 February 1828 in Canaan, Columbia County, New York, where 3 children were born to the couple before their move to Michigan.

Eleanor married Henry Clay Gilbert (1838-1915) about 1861, and was the mother of David H. Gilbert (1872-1881).

Notice of Eleanor's death was given in the 7 December 1916 issue of the "Manchester Enterprise", stating that her funeral had taken place the previous Sunday (3 December).

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, and her three siblings: Sarah Lovejoy (Root) Hoy, Thomas H. Root (1831-1854), and Amanda M. (Root) Crafts (1833-1898). Buried nearby are her nephews, Edwin E. Hoy (1857-1871) and Clarence Hoy (1865-1867).
