Richard Horne Smith, also known to many as “Dick” and “Smithy,” was born March 14, 1924 in Salt Lake City and died April 5, 2013 in Laguna Woods, California.
He was the son of Joseph Richards and Florence Horne Smith, and grandson of Prophet Joseph F. and Sarah Ellen Smith. “Smithy,” as his childhood friends called him, attended South High School in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah, and Harvard University. He served as class presidents in both high school and university. He also served in the Navy at the end of World War II.
He was employed by Lockheed as an Engineer and finished his career with IBM as a worldwide consultant in systems management. As a faithful, loyal member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you could often see a tear in his eyes when sharing his testimony of Christ. He also loved symphonic, big band, and bagpipe music.
A true man of integrity, Dick was the epitome of the word gentleman. Sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 28, 1951 to Carol Rae Richards. He was a wonderful provider and loved spending time with relatives and friends. He also considered his extended family, especially his cousins, his best friends, and always made time to see them when visiting Utah.
Dick and Carol have six children, Steve, Rick, Cindy, Chip, Brian, and Shauna; along with fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom love him dearly and will miss skiing with him.
Friends and family are welcome to attend funeral services to be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street (00 South), Salt Lake City, on Friday, April 12, 2013. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 10:45-11:45 a.m.
He will be buried next to his parents and grandparents in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
