Mildred Goldie Stricklin Bowers, 91, of Cold Springs passed away on Saturday, Oct. 20, at her home near Cold Springs, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on July 2, 1916, in Cold Springs to Mary Catherine Swann and Elisha Thomas Stricklin. She was born and passed away on land that was homesteaded by her father and his brothers in the late 1800s. Her father ran the general merchandise store in Cold Springs. She attended Addington Chapel School and later Cold Springs Elementary School and Cold Springs High School. Her dream of becoming a nurse was unattainable because of the economical impact of World War II and the Depression. However, she always nurtured and felt great compassion for the sick and the elderly. She met and fell in love with Evans Bowers and they were wed in 1937. She taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years and both were founding members of Bremen Baptist Church, where Evans became an ordained minister. She was a homemaker and loving mother to her daughter, Phyllis. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Evans W. Bowers; an infant son, Jerrell Eston Bowers; a sister, Onnie Belle Gossett; a half-sister, Eula Calvert; six half-brothers, Phanander Stricklin, Parrott Stricklin, Homer Allred, Euell Allred, Herman Allred and Bertis Swann.Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis (David) Speegle; four nieces, Ann (Perry) Ray, Cathy (Bobby) McDonald, Linda (Elwin) Grimmett, and Camilla (Jay) Rice; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. She is also survived by her loving caregiver of 10 years, Kemberlee Hyde; and her three children who thought of "Miss Milli" as their grandmother. Tristyn Dean, the youngest, was her special caregiver from birth.Mildred`s family tree on her father`s side: Mildred > Elisha Thomas Stricklin > William Henry Stricklin and Nancy Nelson > William Riley Stricklin and Mary M.
The Stricklins moved to eastern Blount County from Franklin, TN, and settled where Susan Moore High School is now. In the 1880`s, they moved to Cold Springs and homesteaded land east and northeast of Cold Springs School. Mildred was born one mile east of CS School on present County Rd. 109.

Mildred`s family tree on her mother`s side: Mildred > Mary Catherine Swann > Elijah Swann and Mary Francis Scott > William Leroy Swann and Letitia Elms. W.L. and Letitia owned the land where Valley Springs Baptist Church and cemetery is now located. W.L. was the postmaster of that area. They were Primitive Baptists, and they donated the land for Valley Springs Cemetery and a Primitive Baptist church. The church was built west of the cemetery and called "Valley Grove Primitive Baptist,"named after the church near Cave Springs, GA, where many of the members once attended. The PB church was later moved about a mile north and a MB church was built near the cemetery. All of Mildred`s Swann relatives mentioned above, as well as many uncles and cousins, are buried at Valley Springs. Elijah and Francis had a farm between Ben Self Mountain and Smith Lake in what is now called "Simpson Shores," near Kinney Grove MB Church near Bremen, AL. Several of Elijah`s sons raised families at Brushy Pond.

Mildred had one sister, Onnie Belle Stricklin Gossett. She had two half brothers from her father`s first marriage, William Parret Stricklin and Alfred Phanander Stricklin. She also had half siblings on her mother`s side. They were Bertis Swann, Homer Allred, Euell Allred, Eula Allred Calvert, and Herman Allred.
