12 January 1900, page 5:
Parties over from Sheridan Wednesday report that Joe Cisler, 38 years of age, died very suddenly of heart disease Monday night and was buried Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Cisler has been in Montana since childhood, living for awhile near Bannack in its palmiest days. Since he was a small boy he has been crippled, a severe attack of diphtheria being responsible for his affliction. Since growing to manhood he has been engaged in mining and prospecting, doing such work in that calling as his physical condition would admit. He was always a close reader, kept in touch with the current affairs of the day and was one of the best posted young men in Madison county on current events.

'Society of Montana Pioneers,' 1899, James Upton Sanders, page 176:
"Joseph E. Cisler, son of Alfred and Annie (Nichol) Cisler; born in Colorado, October 7th, 1861. Place of departure for Montana, Colorado; route traveled, across the plains; arrived in Montana in 1864. Residence, Sheridan."
