Harold was born in Butterwick, Lincolnshire, England and emigrated to Canada, with his family, in 1913, when he was 16. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916 and fought in France. When on leave, he returned to Lincolnshire and met his wife, who he married in 1917. They travelled to Canada, where he found it hard to settle, and returned to Lincolnshire in 1920. They had four children and Harold farmed in Old Leake for the rest of his life.
