Deputy Alexander was shot and killed while attempting to write a citation to a bar owner for operating during prohibited hours. Deputy Alexander had cited the man in the past. As he entered the bar he was ambushed by the bar owner who was standing behind the counter. The suspect was convicted of manslaughter and released from prison after serving only several years. Deputy Alexander was survived by his wife and son.

James Merlin Alexander was born on September 1, 1937, in Lebanon, Red Willow, Nebraska to Laurence Fredrick and Lucy Rebecca Daffer Alexander. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Mary Yeates in 1955, in Payette, Idaho. Later he married Betty Louise Piatt on Jan. 7, 1960 in Nampa, Idaho.
Deputy Sheriff James Alexander was killed as he investigated a disturbance in the KC Club in Cambridge, Idaho on Christmas night Saturday, December 25, 1965. Tavern operator James Carey, 44, Midvale was accused of first-degree murder in the shooting death of James Alexander.
He died on December 25, 1965, in Cambridge, Washington, Idaho, at the age of 28, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser, Washington, Idaho.
