Adolph Groupe Frozen to Death in the Hills Up Catherine Creek Country
Adolph Groupe aged 23, perished in the storm in the Catherine creek hills in what is known as the "Park" country between Medical Springs and Union sometime during the last 48 hours and his body was found by searchers today at 10 o'clock. Tuesday noon he left his home located in the hills to go to the home of J. B. Hunter, his father-in-law a few miles away to procure a gun for the purpose of hunting cougar which had been plentiful and had ranged so close to his home that they frightened his young wife. When he left he told his wife he would be gone but a short time. At the Hunter home he secured the gun and at 1 o'clock Tuesday started for his own home. Nothing more was heard or seen of him until this morning. When he failed to reach his home Tuesday night his wife became alarmed and as soon as daylight broke on Wednesday morning she hastened to her father's home to learn what had become of her husband. Searchers started out expecting to overtake Mr. Groupe and searched until evening when without results they called Sheriff Warnick telling him the story of Groupe's disappearance. The Sheriff immediately alerted men out from Union and Medical Springs with the result that the searchers found the body of Adolph Groupe lying in the hills where he had apparently become exhausted laid down to rest and froze to death. The young man leaves his young wife, his mother, Lena Groupe of 1301 N. Avenue, La Grande, his sister, Mrs. Ralph Winters, and brothers Olaf, Alfred and William. He was in the late war and saw two and a half years service in the Marine Corps. His health was of the best and it seems strange that with his wide experience and ability to care for himself that he would have met such a death.
